Ken Turner / Turner Pottery

Ken Turner As a Northwest artist/craftsman living in Seattle, I was introduced to ceramics in high school in the early 1970's. I was immediately captivated by the powerful seduction and versatility of clay. Ambitiously, I sought technical instruction and the aesthetic wisdom of many notable contemporary clay artists. In 1977, while attending one of many workshops at Pottery Northwest , Ken Ferguson offered me a scholarship and a grant to the Kansas City Art Institute. After one year I returned to Seattle to be with my soul mate (Laura). We were married and bought a home in 1981. Together we created our family with the birth of our beautiful daughter in 1987. In 1992 we were blessed with the birth of our handsome son. I built a studio in 1983 where I continue to pursue my passion for the creative works I produce in clay.
Mastery of technique and form are admired by collectors and peers alike. My quest for skill and knowledge has rewarded me with the ability to successfully synthesize glaze to form, evoking a quiet eloquence in each piece. My use of gold, platinum, and other precious metals clearly contrasts the raw with the opulent while maintaining a delicate balance between the two. Soft undulating rims and lips suggest a relaxed human element to my forms. The swirling, glaze-trailed motifs symbolize a complex and elaborate journey representative of man's inquisitive pursuit of the unknown. This human connection, prevalent in many of my pieces, forms the heart and spirit of my work. Reflecting a true artistic spirit, I continue to evolve with my work. Having learned to take advantage of the unpredictable nature of clay and fire, my work remains fresh and full of vitality.
